This feature uses the unified payment interface, usually said as UPI. It is the first payment system in India with which you can transfer money with 160 banks.

India’s national payment corporation stated what they would be limiting UPI transactions to protect the ecosystem. However, they did not clear how they will limit the transaction amount. So, Whatsapp will have to make its limits according to the NCPI, which will take some time.

Requirements to send payment through Whatsapp:

  • Bank account
  • Debit card
  • The receiver must have a UPI supported app.

Whatsapp’s instruction to the Indian banks is to transfer the money between receiver and sender via UPI.
